Initial Information

While cycling to work on Friday morning (15 May) Bryan had a truck cross his path on Division Street at the WB entrance ramp to the 401.  Bryan made attempts to slow and get out of the way but the truck and Bryan did make contact.

Welcome........... week 1

Welcome and thank you for taking a moment to stop by.  Yes, Bryan has had quite the accident and is in hospital.  Every corner that we turn there is someone wishing Bryan and his family well wishes and requesting an update.  One of the easiest ways is through the web.

All attempts will be made to keep this site as updated and accurate as possible.

The Guest book link, located up near the top left, will offer you the opportunity to send Bryan and the family your thoughts and wishes.

Thank you for your support!

15 May 2009

Bryan was taken by ambulance to Kingston General Hospital around 9am this morning after striking the grill of a Kenworth tractor trailer. Thankfully due to it being a Friday and mid-morning all trauma staff were on hand to assist.

Mid Day

By mid day the concerns were focused on getting a proper assessment done.  The waiting is always hard and many calls and requests have come in for updates.

4pm
AT this point Bryan has been cleared of any brain injury, although it is apparent that there is some head injury.  He has casts on both arms for wrist and hand injuries and his one hand will require surgery.  He has some broken ribs on the left side, and a punctured lung as well as some internal bruising that is causing some concern.  The next area of concern is to repair a badly broken upper femur.
Bryan will be in surgery in the next few days, so we will keep you updated.

16 May - 1030am

Bryan is presently in ICU.  We hope to have an update for you as soon as possible.

730pm
Bryan had surgery last night (15 May) at 8pm to initiate repairs to both hands, wrists and arms.  They also started repairs on the femur and hip area and seem pleased with these steps.  At present he is being kept unconscious to assist with repairs to the lungs and chest area by keeping him quiet.  They may try to let him wake a bit tomorrow, but are not concerned if he stays under for several days.  He does have several internal injuries that also remain serious areas of concern, but the hope is that these too will also mend with quiet time.
Bryan remains heavily medicated even in the unconsious state and is in Davies 4 ICU.  At this time he is not able to receive visitors, but the family is checking on your messages left in the guest book and appreciate all of the thoughts and best wishes.

17 May - ICU

Early Morning - Bryan had an uneventful night, remaining quiet throughout.  By mid-morning the sedating medication was reduced allowing Bryan to partially waken.  It was quickly apparent that he was in a lot of discomfort, and the medication was increased to assist with his comfort and recovery.

730pm - the same as above, no change at this point.

May 18

Bryan once again had an uneventful night Sunday night, and we hope that the quiet time is assisting with the healing.  Today (Monday) proved to be very similar to yesterday.  The forward progress may appear slow, but this can only be expected with this kind of injury and trauma.

May 19

Tuesday has again been very similar to the past several days.  There is nothing new to update you with at this time.

There is a Drum Circle planned for Thursday May 21 around 5:00 pm in the vicinity of the Kingston General Hospital at City Park (corner of Barrie Street and King Street). Some will begin to gather around 4:30pm, and it is expected to last about an hour.  Please respect that this is a Sacred Ceremony, and refrain from recording this event in any manner.

May 20

Bryan did have a very difficult night last night and is quite heavily sedated right now, but resting much better.  He has been moved to a different ICU that is equipped better for his needs and monitoring.  At present Bryan has pneumonia but this was an expected complication with his injuries.  He remains on a ventilator but they are considering removing this in the near future.  In speaking with surgeons they are presently considering a hip replacement and, to repair his left hand they are likely to replace some of the bones with wires.  The technology is beyond the writer at the moment, but it sounds intriguing.  We hope that Bryan has a restful night tonight.

May 21

A day of change! Bryan's day began with a reduction in sedation.  He was maintaining 40% breathing without relying on the ventilator and so at 230pm they removed the breathing tube.  This could not be easy to endure, but Bryan did.
Bryan is relatively aware of his surroundings and is communicating well with family, even so much as giving Elyse a wink.  He has also chosen at present not to shave, so will be growing a beard.
Bryan must remain in ICU for a minimum of 48 hours following the removal of the breathing tube and to monitor his progress.  He does have an infection at the moment and is being treated for that.  So our wish to Chief Mountain Man is to rest well, and grow stronger with each breath.

Thanks for the wishes

We all find that during difficult times it is a great pick up to receive kind words from those that are thinking of us.  This site is set up for that purpose.  Thank you from Bryan, Donna-Marie, and family.
